Gender equality and youth empowerment are the pivotal themes for societal progress but also for fostering innovation and growth within organizations, according to Zeycan Yildirim. In June, Zeycan was the guest on the ‘People & Purpose’ podcast hosted by Tarja Takko, CEO of Takko Advisory. Zeycan Yildirim is a champion for youth development, gender equality and women’s rights both in Turkey and globally. Through her leadership roles, community partnerships and creative advocacy campaigns, she’s helping shape a world where more women and young people can thrive. From tech empowerment projects and free therapy services for women to global campaigns like the Purple Jersey, Zeycan brings to life what it means for business to be a true ally to purpose.
In this article, we summarize all the gems and highlights from their inspiring conversation.
Gender Equality and Inclusive Leadership
Gender equality is more than a goal, it is a foundation for healthy, thriving communities and businesses. Breaking down barriers means providing equal opportunities for all, irrespective of gender. As Zeycan noted, “It’s showing others that they don’t have to fit in a box to be able to chase their dream, but they can show up as themselves and be who they want to be as well.” Empowering women involves giving them the freedom to define their own identities beyond societal labels.
Inclusive leadership is essential. Women in leadership roles contribute diverse perspectives that enrich decision-making and foster empathy within organizations and communities. Yet, to truly promote gender equality, businesses must recognize unique challenges women face -especially balancing professional and personal responsibilities- and implement supportive policies such as flexible work arrangements and clear diversity targets.
Strategies for Youth Empowerment
Youth empowerment is key to future-proofing leadership and innovation. The interview emphasized the importance of mentorship and role models in shaping young people’s opportunities and confidence. Encouraging young voices to actively participate in decision-making ensures fresh perspectives and novel ideas.
Preparation and organization were highlighted as critical tools for young leaders to overcome biases and build credibility. Tarja reflected, “I think a lot of time people focus on leadership but they take out purpose. Everything starts with purpose.” Integrating purpose with leadership prepares youth to lead with empathy and drive impactful change.
Creating Impactful Change in Organizations
True impact transcends polished PR headlines. Zeycan shared, “Focus on true impact. A lot of companies do things for PR, so everything is a beautiful PR headline in the news, but once you follow their initiatives or culture, there’s not a lot of supporting evidence for that. So I think companies should focus less on PR and more on impact.” This calls businesses to move beyond superficial Corporate Social Responsibility toward authentic, community-rooted efforts.
Engaging with communities to understand their unique needs creates a positive feedback loop — what was referred during the interview as the “circle of impact.” Aligning business strategies with community empowerment not only drives social good but also strengthens organizational culture and reputation. Also, setting strategic diversity and inclusion targets helps ensure that companies’ workforces genuinely reflect the communities they serve, enhancing both innovation and equity.
The Bigger Picture: Purpose and Empathy
Purpose-driven leadership is at the heart of sustainable change. Zeycan shared a profound insight inspired by the book that personally touched her the most titled ‘A Return to Love’ by Marianne Williamson: “Essentially it says that everything is either an act of love or for love. And that sentence alone completely changed my level of empathy towards the world because it’s saying that people are either loving or they’re searching for love.” This mindset fosters deeper connection and compassion within leadership, driving more meaningful, human-centered decisions.
Another reflection from Zeycan captured the motivation behind persevering through challenges: “I believe that my faith is reminding me here that I’m doing something bigger than myself. And I try to take myself out of the equation and understanding that all of the hardships that I’m going through is making it easier for someone else.” Such purpose fuels resilience and a genuine commitment to impact.
Empowering women and youth is fundamental to building equitable, thriving organizations and societies. By embracing inclusive leadership, mentoring emerging leaders, focusing on authentic impact, and grounding efforts in purpose and empathy, businesses can drive transformative change.
